Cakes for Caring : Saturday January 19 at 11 am
First Responders. A term in constant use in our often accident and injury prone society. Initial thoughts may take us to fire, rescue, police and ambulance services. Embedded in these essential, veteran services and extending beyond them and into all aspects of our communities, is the profession of paramedic. While in its infancy when compared to other health and safety emergency services, paramedics are typically the first to respond to and intervene in emergency situations whether those involve drug overdose, vehicle accident or catastrophic illness.

On Saturday January 19th at 11 am Anglican Church communities across Greater Victoria will call by a local first responder centre near them to bring expressions of gratitude to those who daily demonstrate such caring and provide protection and security to us. The Cathedral will make its presentation at the paramedic headquarters on Douglas Street.

We need your help: bake a cake or cakes, help write a card(s) of thanks, and/or come along to meet the paramedics. And if you have ideas for other ways to show our appreciation, please let me know as soon as possible. (Cakes for Caring was created by Church Wardens at a regional meeting In November).

Blessed are you, Lord, God of mercy, who through your Son gave us a perfect example of charity and the great commandment of love for one another. Send down your blessings on these we describe as first responders, who so generously devote themselves to helping others. Grant them courage when they are afraid, wisdom when they must make quick decisions, strength when they are weary, and compassion in all their work. When the alarm sounds and they are called to aid both friend and stranger, let them faithfully serve you in their neighbour. Amen
