Christ Church Cathedral is committed to following the advice of public health authorities for faith-based organizations, as well as any further provisions prescribed by our diocesan COVID advisory team.
Many early restrictions have been lifted, and it is now up to individuals to act according to their personal needs and conscience.
For example, we are no longer mandating social distancing. People may decide for themselves where to sit, and how far apart. Similarly, during public worship, masks are recommended, but are no longer required. This includes singing.
Social gatherings, including coffee hour and potlucks are now permitted, and we hope that this will allow us to reclaim a sense of community and camaraderie. The clergy are once again permitted to greet people at the door. Pastoral visits are once again permitted.
What restrictions remain?
We are still asking people to refrain from handshakes and hugs (for instance, at the exchange of the Peace). Those administering communion will continue to wear a mask to do so. Beginning September 11, we will once again invite people to receive the sacrament at the communion rail. We'll also maintain a standing station at the St Christopher altar.
Most of all, we want and need to be mindful of those whose good health may be precarious. Please remember that this could be anyone, old or young, weak or strong.
As we begin to enjoy these new freedoms, we are well aware that we may need to reintroduce some restrictions in the fall. It is important to be mentally and emotionally prepared for this possibility. But for now, it does seem as if we have some blessed latitude.
