Victoria Philharmonic Choir to perform Elgar's magnum opus in showstopping concert

"This is the best of me." -Edward Elgar

Come hear why Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius was once described  as "epic choral stupendousness." Composed in 1900 by Elgar to a poem by John Henry Newman, this operatic work relates the death of a man, and then the journey of the devout man's Soul, through encounters with angels and demons, and on to his final judgement. One of the greatest challenges for a large choir, accompanied by a large orchestra as well as the Cathedral's magnificent Wolff organ!

The role of Gerontius is to be sung by UK-based tenor, Joshua Ellicott, who has won acclaim for his performances, most recently in Berlin. Returning to Victoria, baritone Nathaniel Watson is the Priest/Angel of the Agony and singing the role of the Angel is Victoria resident, mezzo-soprano Sarah Fryer. Between them, this trio has sung the work in different musical centres of the world.

As part of the Re-Connect Festival presented by Climate and the Arts & CreativelyUnited.org this concert also invites the audience to reflect on our shared human journey in the face of an existential climate crisis.
