Jonathan Brower (he/him) is a queer bilingual (EN/FR) communications professional with experience as a writer, artist, producer and administrator. His role at the Cathedral is 0.6 FTE (or about 22.5 hrs per week).
Jonathan has formal training in communication studies, social justice, and drama with over 10 years experience in non-profit communications, including theatre and church. He is passionate about storytelling as a vehicle for education and activism, radical hospitality, conciliation, and the arts. In addition to his communications work, he has worked in theatre education and arts administration for the Belfry Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Third Street Theatre, Lunchbox Theatre, and Ghost River Theatre.
Jonathan grew up between Greater Victoria (Saanich) and Calgary. After living abroad and training in ministry, he completed a BA in Communications with minors in Radio Broadcasting & Italian Language (University of Calgary). He then pursued a BFA in Drama (University of Calgary) while concurrently co-founding and leading Third Street Theatre, a Calgary-based non-profit arts society dedicated to showcasing 2SLGBTQ+ stories, voices, and culture on stage where he served as the artistic producer / director for six seasons. Jonathan recently completed his MA in Social Justice and Equity at Brock University in St. Catharines.
Jonathan is also a playwright and performer and is most proud of the impact of his semi-autobiographic plays oblivion (Third Street Theatre), which details the real-life consequences of conversion therapy in Canada, and Good Hands (Theatre of the Beat), which exposes religious-based power and policy abuses impacting sexual and gender minorities. These works have toured across Canada as well as in the Netherlands. His most recent work, his SSHRC-awarded thesis project That Power (co-created with Ari Paranthahan), is a living performance archive that collages moments of loss, trauma and self-reinvention into a queerly spiritual timeline where heartbreak bends toward unexpected friendship and collective resistance.
When not at the Cathedral you might see Jonathan in working as an extra for various film/TV shows, performing/writing live theatre, kayaking the harbour, reading comic books, grooving to 90s music on vinyl, or studying wine.
