Old Music for the New Year (Part 1): Telemann Cantatas for Advent and Christmas
Musical Event
Musical Event
Friday, December 31, 2021

The first of two concerts featuring Telemann Cantatas for this holiday season, music that deserves to be programmed more frequently. Written to be performed in church or the ‘domestic scene’, these evocative cantatas are a masterly blend of tunefulness with skilled counterpoint and vocal and instrumental virtuosity, some written for ‘hohe Stimme’ (soprano or tenor) or for ‘mittlere Stimme’ (alto or baritone), one obbligato instrument (violin, transverse flute, recorder or oboe) and basso continuo.

This concert’s program includes Telemann’s gorgeous seasonal cantatas for Advent 1, Advent 2, Advent 3 and Christmas 3 as well as Heinrich Biber’s Sonata No. 1 in d minor for violin and basso continuo, ’The Annunciation’, from the ‘Mystery’ or ‘Rosary’ Sonatas (ca. 1674).

Both these concerts feature soprano Ai Horton, baritone Nathan McDonald, baroque violinist Marc Destrubé, Natalie Mackie on the viola da gamba and Christine Hutten playing the organ.

This concert is presented in partnership with the Pacific Baroque Festival.
