Music Endowment Fund
In 1995, a small group of parishioners embarked on a mission to replace the rapidly deteriorating organ. Their endeavours slowly gathered financial support and, in 1997, developed into the Music Endowment Fund (MEF).
The first mandate for the MEF was the replacement of our old organ. With the completion of the new instrument, designed and built by Hellmuth Wolff and Associates, and installed in 2005, the Fund now continues its mandate of supporting and advancing the music ministry of the Cathedral.
The MEF is a perpetual fund, augmented by the continued support of donors through their gifts and legacies, which enables the Cathedral to continue its ministry of music in new and exciting ways. In addition to replacing the organ, it has funded the acquisition of a replacement piano, used during contemporary services and for a variety of recitals. The MEF supports the training of young church musicians by funding, on an annual basis, four to six choral scholarships to students of musical ability and promise who sing in the Cathedral Choir. Most recently it has been used to attract four junior choristers to augment the St Christopher Singers, thanks to recent donations from members of the parish.
For the past several years the MEF has sponsored a summer organ recital series which is increasing in renown, and is now exploring the possibility of developing a parallel choral series. In addition, it has sponsored a number of major organ recitals by international artists, a very popular summer afternoon recital series and other musical events.
The legacy of the MEF will ensure that the joy of music continues to be an integral part of the life of the Cathedral and its mission to reveal God’s presence in our community for generations to come. New donations to the MEF are gratefully accepted to further the goals of the Fund.
In the near future, we will be posting photo galleries that will cover the construction and installation of the new organ.
