Does your child love to sing? Do they enjoy a challenge? Would they benefit from a free comprehensive musical education? Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria, is delighted to announce the introduction of a new and ambitious program of choral training for talented girls and boys aged seven to thirteen.

This new ‘chorister’ program loosely modelled after the English cathedral tradition has gained significant interest from students and families of the Christ Church Cathedral School. There are still a limited number of places left which will be offered to homeschooled children in the Victoria area. Children who enroll can expect to gain a world class musical education including exposure to a wide range of quality music, opportunities for national and international tours, experience as team players (and leaders), a chance to contribute to music on a professional level, and an excellent social experience and opportunity to make new friends.

These new choristers will be given an opportunity to sing most weekday mornings, and within the first six months they will begin to sing a weekly service of choral evensong in cathedral, after school. There will be no commitments on weekends.

Speaking about the program, Donald Hunt, Director of Music at the Cathedral said: “I’m thrilled to announce this new partnership with the Cathedral School, which will be unique in Canada. My experience of training choristers in the United Kingdom (at Truro Cathedral, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and most recently, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh), has shown me what amazing feats children are capable of when they come together as a team. The life of a chorister can be demanding, but from everything I’ve seen, the immediate rewards for the child are many, and the skills they learn will be with them for the rest of their lives.”

The Cathedral will be hosting an information session for interested parents and children on November 15, 2017 at 7pm in the Cathedral’s Chapel of the New Jerusalem (Burdett Street entrance). Auditions will begin in November 2017 and rehearsals are set to commence in January 2018.
